Beautiful response! On so many levels. I moved from Davis/Sacramento area to the Bay Area after college to write for a newspaper and made a very sad salary. Then I went to the "dark side" (aka PR) to make more money. I tripled my salary but guess what, it STILL was hard to make ends meet and that was 15 years ago! I can't imagine how impossible it is now. It sounds like this person is intelligent, mindful, and hardworking. As someone who has had a few more years of experience, can I just say that I do not for one second worry about this FoTS? This letter and their concern says a lot about their emotional intelligence. FoTS, keep doing you. You will get through it.
Stephanie, as you know, we recently interviewed someone who graduated university around the same time as you, and one thing you both mentioned is how your initial salaries were very bad to the point where it was difficult to make ends meet. It’s interesting to see how this seems to be a recurring issue from generation to generation. Maybe it’s the industry because the person we interviewed was also a reporter, but data shows how this happen across multiple industries. As time goes on, I’m eager to see how Gen Z and Gen Alpha continue to adapt to these realities by creating separate communities of support that make these transitions a bit more fair and seamless.
